The Damned - New Rose 12'' EP (1985)

I don't need an excuse to put The Damned on here but as I saw them last night, here they are anyway.

Last nights gig......well by the time we got there which was early (7.30pm) Girlschool were already playing and played very well in front of a large but static audience. I felt a bit sorry for them really and they deserved better but going on that early isn't going to help. I got my wish with Race For The Devil anyway.

Next up The Damned who kicked off with New Rose and it was bedlam down the front. Alas there were some of local tossers down there trying to cause trouble. Not punks or metalheads....just 20 something Janners with nothing better to do. They didn't get there wish but the atmosphere was not as relaxed as The Specials last week. Anyway the blinding Damned set included Street Of Dreams,Neat Neat Neat, Disco Man,Love Song,Smash It Up,Elouse and an awesome Lookin' At You. I think they were on for about 45 minutes which isn't bad for a "support" band but in reality for fans of The Damned, not long enough. They went down well though considering the majority of the crowd were metalheads.

Next up Motorhead and an odds-on headache. Lemmy is a legend isn't he and the whole place shook as they hammered their songs out. They played alot of new stuff and although its very good (off the Motorizer album) I wanted a greatest hits session so I was a tiny bit miffed. The best part was yet to come though and it was "fitting" that on the 11th day of the 11th month they ended their set with Bomber. I remember saying to my mate "If the encore isn't Overkill and Ace Of Spades I won't be happy" so when the band came on to the distinctive opening mayhem of Ace Of Spades I was happy and the place went off. We were pogoing I think lol. And the night was complete when those thundering drums went into Overkill (the 12'' long version) and I enjoyed this one more than any other. Bloody brilliant song.

Overall out of 10 this gig gets a 9.5. It wasn't as good a night as The Specials but I don't think anything will be. My head is hurting but what do you expect after Lemmy & co. I was disappointed that Lemmy didn't come on and do a song with The Damned and also the fact that Girlschool didn't join Motorhead for a St Valentines Day Massacre (Please Don't Touch) but maybe I'm asking too much. Was it worth £25 quid? Hell yes!

Lemmy's a loyal man, he picked bands he's been running with for thirty years (and while I'm not surprised that there wasn't a Doomed reunion I would've bet on some MotorSchool action.)

Glad the show was good and thanks for the recap for all us jealous bastards.

The Stiff 7" (Plug copy) eas my sis's Xmas present back in 1976! When I worked @ Dingwalls back in the early 80's I often used to stay up (!) all night chatting to Lemmy! A good man...

Cheers Jeff. Maybe there will be some Motorschool action later on during the tour.

Mona if you were "up all night" with Lemmy then I bet you were out of your head lol. Despite seeing the band a few times,I've never had the pleasure of speaking to him.

Could tell you some stories. A classic was Mr Radiation in tears back at my gaff just after The Specials broke up, thinking there wass NO chance of him getting back to the Us to get clobber.Lemmy didn't think much of that to say the least. He wld invariably take home a BIG bottle of Vodka (those massive sized ones that you put on optics, and a replacement wld arrive by taxi the next day. Crazy!
Btw, saw yr comment at that nteresting new post from Shane.
(Memoires...)

Glad to see the Damned still going strong. Haven't seen them live since about 1986 at the Apollo in Manchester. Fantastic that night.

I was chatting to a mate over a beer the other day and I said I thought Lemmy must be a pensioner. FFS he was playing with Hawkwind almost 40 years ago. (Not that I'd ask him face to face)!!

Cheers Mona. Yes I can imagine that being funny. As for Shane.....just saying what I feel but only Shane will know when the time is right for him.

Mullers you are just about right there. I saw watching a documentary on Motorhead from 2005 (filmed in 2003) just last night and he was 58 in that so yes he is old. You wouldn't think it though (or say it to his face lol)

Yes I must read his autobiography anon. Sounds good.

I never did own a 12'' white vinyl of this one AJ but the one I really regret not having now is the Skydog label version which was signed. On the back theres a picture of Brian James and Captain Sensible scribbled the fuck out of it and blanked his face out.

I do like Motorhead, but how can the Damned be the support band. Wrong way round for me.

Typical answer I would expect from you Gary as an old punk. I totally agree with you as well!
