Shane MacGowan - If I Should Fall From Grace: The Shane MacGowan Story (2000)

Any sane person with decent taste would already have seen this one but for the few of you who might not have, here is a terrific documentary which is an almost 91 minutes long. Jeff Shannon sums this up perfectly.........

"As any Pogues fan could've told you, The Shane MacGowan Story was destined to be funny, sad, uplifting, depressing, and utterly irresistible. By the time this engaging documentary was produced in 2000, MacGowan-former Pogues frontman, notorious drinker, and one of the greatest songwriters of his generation--was still the unrepentant alcoholic who caused his former bandmates so much worry. They loved him then and love him still (bandmate Philip Chevron speaks most eloquently of their history), and for all his toothless cackling and constant stupor, MacGowan is seen here as an amiable Irish pub-crawler, coherent in thought if not always in speech, still making music (with his latter-day band, the Popes), and obviously devoted to his wife, Victoria Clarke, an enabling saint whose love for MacGowan is joyfully unconditional. Archival clips, video excerpts, and interviews with MacGowan's friends and family complete this comprehensive chronicle, making it an essential addition to any punk-'n-Pogues library"

For me,Shane MacGowan is a living legend. I don't think theres anyone alive today who had written such great songs especially love songs (A Rainy Night In Soho probably my favourite of all time) I will openly admit, when Shane does die (and I'm amazed he hasn't already given his lifestyle) I will cry my bloody eyes out.

And in case you didn't know Shane is now back touring with The Pogues and has also been busy teaming up with the likes of Mick Jones,Glen Matlock,Johnny Depp,Nick Cave,Bobby Gillespie,Chrissie Hynde,Paloma Faith and Eliza Doolittle to release a fantastic old classic for the charity "Concern" to help the people of Haiti. Read about it and order the song here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=327930934009 (its only 79p in digital form) You don't need a facebook account to view that page either so click on it!

This documentary seems to be a different version of a documentary wich I saw on the BBC years ago.
That documentary featured a lot of the same interviews, but had some additional voice overs; it ended with Shane McGowan singing 'Kitty' in a bar, after telling that he learned the song from his mother (who also sang a verse in the documentary).
But maybe my memory is playing tricks on me and I have combined two different programmes...
Whatever the case: it is a great documentary. I always get excited when I see early Pogues stuff; and that clip with the Dubliners always makes me smile.

Hi Just8. Yes it is different documentary to this one although it did feature much of the same stuff if I remember correctly. The Kitty sung in the bar is on the extras on this one. I will up the extras if you want them.

Cheers

Hi,

I can see why they're extra's but they're funny and moving nonetheless.
