Longy!! The Pursesnatcher revival starts here!! (remember that nickname for him? possibly coined by Garry Bushell in Sounds, and used by no-one else, but I always kinda think of him as that). F***king exciting posts. I'm just back from the pub myself but will be giving all these a close listen & will report back shortly. Did you ever hear the more recent Sham album (with JP still present) "Soapy Water & Mr. Marmalade"? it's impossible to find anything about - supposedly it is a "concept album" in the style of (and possibly a sequel to) "That's Life". For all it's faults, "That's Life" is one of my all time favourite albums. One day, social historians will pick up on it as a pretty f***in' useful document/interpretation of the period, from within the period. No one ever seems to talk about it though! A sequel to it (or even a new concept record from Sham - albeit possibly from 10 years back - - yeah, I'm a snail-paced researcher) could be a disaster, but could be fascinating... Enough, I need to head to bed. Thanks again for the three JP albums! Jimmy is our leader!! You ain't far behind with these shit-hot posts, tho'...

The "Pursesnatcher" Yes I remember that phase and your right,I'm pretty sure that was Bushell. Pretty low of him considering he used to a roadie for Sham. Maybe they didn't pay well eh

Soapy Water is not a bad album at all as it happens. Its got a hint of Thats Life about it but a modern updated version in a much smaller way. Nowhere near the excellent Thats Life but still good. I don't actually think Thats Life has any faults at all really. Sham were one of the few bands that managed to avoid the dreaded second album sydrome. I read that last sentence in Sounds as well!

I've got a copy of Soapy on the computer. I'll upload it for you before Christmas if you want it.

You're pretty much right about That's Life not having any faults! (What was I talking about there? After a couple of jars, I'm anybody's...). Only possible false move was the "Where am I?" bit... The idea that the whole thing was a dream is by turns ridiculous/hilarious/genius - - the latter especially when the line "you're at home, where d'ya think you bleedin' are?" kicks in... One of my all-time favourite recorded moments.

I'd love to hear Soapy, if you have time to post for evaluation purposes. Been toying with the idea of getting it for ages, but it's sounded a risky bet. Thanks as always for all your work on the blog!

I always thought the line "Where am I?" had to do with the fact that he'd gotten so drunk the night before, and that when he woke up, he had no idea where he was...

Great art allows many interpretations!

Cheers!

Art! Thats a new one for a Sham description but you are right of course. I always interpretated it as both he got drunk and had a dream. It happens to me sometimes.......then I piss the bed and wake up lol

hello. i just came by searching for a specific Jimmy Pursey info. let me just tell you that i am an avid Pursey fan since 1982, when i found the 'Alien Orphan' LP. Later a good friend gave me the 'Revenge Is Not The Password' LP. I had no idea that he was the frontman of Sham 69. I never liked S69 too much, i must admit. Then i bought the 'Imagination Camouflage'. The three vinyls have never failed to amaze me. Words fail me to describe how good this music is. Also check out the 1996/1997 released Cds with 'modern' remixes of some of the best songs of 'Revenge Is Not The Password'. See http://www.discogs.com/artist/Jimmy+Pursey Quoted from an interview with Jimmy Pursey,
unfortunately no longer available on the Internet:

Question one:
What would you do? If your manager's gone, your home has gone, your girlfriends nearly gone and you're thinking 'Revenge is not the password' ?

Now then. Andy Anderson, i believed, could help me develop a sound in Surrey sound studios in Leatherhead where The Police (thats the band) would record most of their sounds with the in-house producer.

Nice man, gave him the cash from what i had left from the house sale to make the album.

We have had the falklands. We have had Palestine. We had 1984 knocking on the door.
I wanted a very Rhythmic drum sound, a lot of base, not much guitar.
Unordinary to music but normal in everyday life sounds.
Rhythms, echoes and uncliched slogans.
As to what was going on around me i felt the last leaves on the tree falling off me.
After going to Elephant Fayre in Cornwall with my lastest production, long pig from Guildford who was found at the end of the garden sniffing glue, and a singer who was a goat shepherd (true) only London appearance supporting The Specimen Sex Gang Children (alien sex fiend) etc at Heaven, the Bat Cave.
I was streched from head to toe, but my balls were on the table my money
was where my mouth was, whatever had gone on before had now been stretched to its limit.
So my identifcation on this album was a before and after of my own self analysis and what was around me.
Die in Disneyland, Kamicazi Davey & Attractions were very early drum and base so of course the press said: "he's only got drum and base on these tracks".
That's right, seventeen years later they would accuse me of jumping on the band wagon.
I love bands but i don't like wagons.
This is a very filmatic panoramic blend of paranoia and observation.

yes, this is a very good description:
